Accolades for Betty Larned

Richard Wesley: That choir was a very important part of our lives. Betty Larned was single then and was very demanding (practiced twice a week) but also a wonderful mentor and teacher. She used to teach us music theory along with the value of hard work and commitment. The choir was very well regarded. We did a big Christmas program (a candlelight service) and in the summer groups of us went to other churches to perform. She’s still living in Lima. She was a big influence in my life.

Donna Cunningham: A major influence in my life as well. I remember when she took us to the Eastman Theater to hear Handel’s Messiah and lectured us on exactly when to stand at the beginning of the Hallelujah Chorus lest we should embarrass her. Then she came to one of our concerts in Livonia and was absolutely appalled that we were singing “Clang, Clang went the Trolley.” I’ll never forget her.
