A Devotional by Pastor Dorothy Hotchkiss

Are we what we remember?

The end of verse Luke 22:19 shares a directive from Jesus Christ. “Do this in remembrance of me.” Do we? During COVID-19 most of us have had some time to remember, to reflect. Remembering affects our work life, our personal life, even our spiritual life. Today let’s think about our spiritual life. In the springtime of the year 30 A.D., small gatherings of Jewish men, women and children gathered all over the city of Jerusalem to remember. They gathered to remember what their ancestors had done for nearly 13 centuries. It was Passover and they gathered to share a meal together to celebrate God’s delivering them from slavery. Each meal began with the father of a family, or the rabbi and his pupils, or a host with guest, taking bread in his hands and praising God for the grain from the earth. Following the meal, the final cup of wine would praise God for the fruit of the vine. Holy Thursday in the upper room, Jesus changed the words as He raised the bread and shared the final cup of wine. He told His disciples to “do this in remembrance of me?”

I ask — are we what we remember? Have you come to The Lord’s table in remembrance of Jesus Christ? Are you doing what Jesus directed? It was His last recorded statement to us, to His disciples before His crucifixion. To remember — to have a memory you must know something about Him. Parents, have you brought your children to The Lord’s table to know Jesus, to have a memory of being in His presence? COVID-19 has taken away routine communion. Praise the Lord! Now we can look forward, anticipate, celebrate coming together to make memories as we come into His presence to share The Lord’s table. You are invited!

For now, stay home. Be safe. Pray for those who continue to work in essential businesses. I’ll let you know when church doors are open and The Lord’s Supper is served!

Love in Christ.
