Lead Me On

Precious Lord, take my hand

Lead me on, let me stand

I’m tired, I’m weak, I’m lone

Through the storm, through the night

Lead me on to ...

Where are you willing to follow our “precious Lord”? The lyrics are asking the Lord to lead us.

Where are you willing to go following the inspiration, the instruction of Jesus Christ?

Let’s start over. Where is this song taking your mind? “Lead [us] on to ... what? - A better job? - A new relationship? - To approach that life-long dream? - To a stronger relationship with God?

Are you tired, physically, emotionally or spiritually because you’re fighting life’s storms day and night! No rest for the weary. No place to find the strength, nor the drive to beat “the storm”. The song points out our weaknesses but its message seems to indicate that we know Him. We are seeking Him, His leadership but we are proud and want to “stand” alone. The first line is asking our “precious Lord” to take [our] hand. You know what it is like to hold someone’s hand. Take a hold of a child’s hand it fits so nice into the palm of your hand. Automatically you are on “stand by” to protect, guide, share with this child. Remember holding a parent’s hand? I remember holding my earthly father’s hand when I was an adult. Not sure why, or where we were. His hand felt the same to me as when I was a child. It was firm, strong, warm. Just before I started to pull my hand away, Dad squeezed my hand — ah — I wanted to put it back into his grip. I didn’t want to let go, but I had. Then there was a quick empty almost sick feeling that went away immediately because Dad smiled and added his quiet little chuckle. It was OK. Everything was OK.

Still haven’t determined where we are willing to follow the “precious Lord”. The lyrics to the song ask to be led TO THE LIGHT!!! Verses from the NKJV: John 8:12 - “Then Jesus spoke to them again saying, “I am the light of the world: He who follows me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life!” Psalm 18:28 - “For it is you who light my lamp; the Lord my God lightens my darkness (burdens).” Psalm 119: 105 - “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path”.

Where did this song take your mind? No matter the challenges or the storms you are facing you have reached out to take Jesus’ hand. You have taken the first step to walk in “the light”. Have you ever felt the warmth of His presence, the strength to make the right decision? Yet, sometimes you have an empty feeling that maybe you’re standing alone? Through prayer you receive the assurance everything is OK. Everything is in its place.

Through the storm, through the night

Take my hand, precious Lord, lead me home. Music & Lyrics by Thomas A. Dorsey 1932
