Understanding or Trust? Proverbs 3: 5-6 NKJV

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.

The Merriam-Webster Dictionary’s definition of “understand: to have thorough or technical acquaintance with or expertness in.” “Understanding: the power to make experience intelligible.”

We, mankind, have a never ending craving to figure things out in order to feel in control offering us a sense of peace. The world presents an endless series of challenges and problems. We may master one set, another challenge pops up to wipe out the relief, the peace that we anticipated. The verse from Proverbs starts with the word trust. I think we skip right over the word and ignore the strength we can receive in our lives by trusting. “Trust in the Lord, lean not on your own understanding.” Lean not — we are not going to be a master of our life without acknowledging Him and trusting Him, lean on Him. The definition of trust: “believe in reliability, truth, ability, or strength of;” Synonym of trust is faith! Now we’re getting somewhere. Peace comes by letting Jesus Christ be our guide, be in control. We trust what he tells us time and time again. Our seed of faith is based on the trust we have in Jesus Christ and it grows into strength and ability as we seek Him.

The wisest of all men, Solomon, could never think his way through to peace. His vast understanding turned to feelings of fruitless, worthless, not fulfilled. Solomon lost his way and succumbed to the will of his wives by worshiping idols.

Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. 2 Thessalonians 3:16 NKJV. Jesus’ peace is not a hidden goal that we have to find! It may feel that way because we are not seeking and trusting in Jesus’ promises, we are just waiting for it to happen. When we are in His presence as in prayer, or an attitude of worship, we gain awareness of this precious peace.

Precious are you in His sight!
