A Devotional by Pastor Dorothy Hotchkiss

25 June 2020

What gloriously beautiful days!! - Perfect weather to catch up on things that we have been putting off, due to the heat. I don’t have any vegetable plants this year and we are missing them ... hmmm ... may not be too late to plant a few. It’s not too late for a lot of things ... including your spiritual life. Just like growing a garden. Need some rich soil, moisture, and sunshine. You’ll find that rich soil by reading the Bible, or a daily devotional that may take just 5 minutes. I hope you enjoy the Midweek Devotionals that I have shared ... and there are many other devotionals that fit your personal interest, your family needs ... ; dig deep into the rich soil of God’s word. Of course your prayers are the moisture for the spirit. Daily, often quick showers of prayers and sometimes thunderstorms as our sighs and moans of despair are shared with God. Now how about that “sonshine”? His love just pours down on us. There are days that look cloudy, could it be that we have stepped away from seeking God’s leadership and comfort?

The Bible character that we are going to visit is Elijah. The short review is based on 1 Kings 19: 19-21. We are focusing on verse 19. “Elijah went from there and found Elisha son of Shaphat. Elisha was plowing ... ”

The prophet Elisha is very interesting. He lived during a time of extremes in the history of Israel: extreme wealth for a few, extreme poverty for many, extreme weather, and extreme disloyalty to the true God.

Wow! Doesn’t that sound like today?

Elisha served for over fifty years as a prophet, during the rule of four kings. By God’s power he was able to do many miracles that pointed to the ministry and mission of Jesus Christ. Elisha’s name also pointed to Jesus. Both the names Elisha and Jesus mean “God saves.” Elisha was a farmer, not a graduate of prophet school. He was an ordinary person called by God. When Elijah threw his cloak over Elisha, Elisha knew the Lord was calling him to speak to the people of Israel.

We are being called to share GOOD NEWS! God is King. Jesus the Savior has conquered sin and death. The Spirit of God is at work renewing every square inch of the world we live in!! Do you believe it? Talk to God! Then listen! You may have something to say as a voice of God, after all, prophets are ordinary people.
