Celebrated Their Golden Wedding Day

From the Livonia Gazette, 10 December 1953

Last Sunday Dec. 6, was a memorable day for Mr. and Mrs. Harvey S. Colegrove of Livonia, for on that day they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Open house was held at their Spring Street residence from 1 to 4 in the afternoon, and following in the evening was a party attended by some 60 relatives and close friends. At the afternoon reception Mrs. Frederick Colegrove served the punch, while Mrs. Victor Colegrove and Mrs. Kenneth Case, Jr., poured. In the evening Mrs. Richard Case and Mrs. Dana Colegrove poured.

Leona Hoppough, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis F. Hoppough, and Harvey S. Colegrove were married on Dec. 9, 1903, at the home of the bride’s parents, who lived at the head of Canadice Lake. Mr. Colegrove’s parents were Orrin and Saloma Robinson Colegrove and the family lived on the east side of Canadice Lake. The officiating clergyman was the Rev. John W. Barnett, then Methodist minister at Springwater and Canadice Corners. Of the guests at the wedding, eight were present Sunday at the reception; Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Preston, Speedie Preston, Maude Van Duyne, Mrs. Colegrove’s brother, Burdette Hoppough; three sisters, Mrs. Edson Sleight, Mrs. Bertha Fogarty, Mrs. Leo Marshall. Mr. and Mrs. Colegrove recall that the wedding day weather was cool, but that there was a heavy fall of snow that night.

In the spring following their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Colegrove moved to Livonia, where they lived in the house now owned by Robert Shepard, just south of the Congregational Church, owned then by Mrs. E. R. Bolles and known as the Johnson place. Subsequently they lived in the Commercial Street - Branch Street triangle, then owned by Ernest Bissell; the Frank Colegrove place on Linden Street, owned now by John Murphy; Bald Hill for two years; the present Charles Robinson place on Washington Street, then to their present location of Spring Street, where they went 35 years ago. Mr. Colegrove worked for the village a couple of years but for the last 45 or so has been in the employ of Reed & Reed.

Mr. and Mrs. Colegrove have three children: Mildred (Mrs. Kenneth) Case of Rochester, Frederick Colegrove of Springwater and Victor of Livonia; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Eight of the grandchildren and three of the greats were present at Sunday’s anniversary reception. All members of this large family live in western New York except one grandchild, Mrs. Shirley Case Boylan of Albuquerque, New Mexico.
