Harry H. Garfield and Lillian F. Jenks Garfield began building their cottage at Canadice Lake NY in 1925. The cottage was located on the west lake road about one half way down the lake. They called their cottage “The Yellow Shutters of Canadice”.

The Obituary of Harry H. Garfield

Harry H. Garfield, 79, of 485 Oxford St., president of the H. H. Garfield Realty Corp. and a former president of the New York State Assn. of Real Estate Boards, died yesterday (Dec. 14, 1955) after a long illness.

Mr. Garfield, a native of Holley, was educated in Holley High School and Fort Plain, N. J., Military Academy. After he was graduated from the academy, he came to Rochester and joined his brother, Charles, in the Garfield Real Estate Co.

The firm was the largest of its kind in the city and in the state. It promoted the development of a number of subdivisions and had one of the largest rental departments in the state.

One of its first subdivisions was Hillcrest tract off Chili Avenue. Others the firm developed are Home Acres at Monroe and Highland Avenues; Bel-Air in Winton Road South; Maywood tract in Irondequoit; Wintondale in Winton Road North, and Boulevard Heights in Genesee Park Boulevard.

Charles Garfield retired in 1917 and Harry continued the business until 1933.

A short time later, Harry Garfield resumed business under the title of H. H. Garfield Realty Corp. The office is in the former Genesee Valley Union Trust Co. building. Charles Garfield founded the firm in the Powers Building in 1892. in 1903 it was moved to 1 Exchange St. The founder died 25 years ago.

Harry Garfield was president of the New York State Assn. of Real Estate Boards in 1922. In 1947 the Real Estate Board of Rochester presented him a plaque in recognition of his services as head of the state organization.

He is survived by his wife, Lillian Jenks Garfield, and a son, Hobart H. Garfield of Dallas, Tex. A private memorial service will be held at the Murphy Mortuary, 535 Oxford St. Burial will be in Holley Cemetery.
