Wedding of Esther Wahl and Nathan G. Westbrook

From the Livonia Gazette, 29 October 1926

A number attended the wedding of Miss Esther Wahl, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Wahl of Scottsville Road and Nathan Glen Westbrook of Hemlock, which took place Saturday afternoon in the West Avenue Methodist church in Rochester. The Rev. W. H. English, pastor, officiated.

The maid of honor was Miss Beatrice Arthur and the best man was Nathan Short of Hemlock, a cousin of the bridegroom. The bridesmaids were Miss Lois Wahl and Miss Helen Wahl, sisters of the bride. The ushers were David E. Wahl, a brother of the bride, and Otto K. Westbrook, a brother of the bridegroom. Miss Arlene Hill of Athens, Pa., was organist. The church was decorated with palms gladioli and fall flowers. Supper for members of the two families was served after the ceremony at the home of the bride’s parents.

Mr. and Mrs. Westbrook will reside in Hemlock after December 1. Mrs. Westbrook was a former teacher in the high school there. The couple have the good wishes of the community. Among the prenuptial events were showers given by members of Oatka Chapter, Order of Eastern Star, and members of the Vida L. Cobb Club at the home of Mrs. William Brooks on Seward street.

J. H. Waterson of Leicester, England and N. G. Westbrook of Hemlock NY, Aug 1956.

These two men met for the first time the 26th of last month, though they had been acquainted by correspondence for the last 18 years.

The messengers Waterson and Westbrook became correspondents through FIDAC, a group of World War I veterans, sponsored by the British and the American Legions. During the years of letter writing neither had the opportunity to meet the other until this year when Mr. Waterson, a retired railroad man, and Mrs. Waterson arrived in Montreal, July 25, en route to Sidney, Australia, to visit his sister, whom he has not seen since 1931.

Mr. Westbrook met the Watersons at Cornwall, Canada, on July 26 and after visiting the 1000 Islands, the St. Lawrence Seaway and various other points of interest the Watersons spent several days in Hemlock. They left last Thursday for Chicago. They will visit Moorehead, Minn., Winnipeg, Sask., where an uncle resides, and then to sail for Sidney on Sept. 11 on the S. S. Orcades. Honolulu, Fijis, and Auckland, New Zealand, are included in the itinerary. They will spend seven months in Sydney before returning to England.

The Watersons’ home is Leicester, England, which is in the Midlands, some 99 miles from London. They were impressed by the natural beauty of this part of New York State and the number of mechanical aids the American housewife has to help her in the task of keeping house. Mechanical refrigeration and electric washing machines and other things which we take for granted are not nearly so common in England. Another thing which impressed them was the service that Americans receive at the “corner gas station.” The checking of oil, water, tires, and wiping the windshield are distinctly American. Mr. Waterson also says that free maps are unknown in England. The American sense of humor is also a new, but pleasant experience, according to Mr. Waterson: while Mrs. Waterson commented upon the brevity of some of the costumes worn on the street by American women.
