Rainy Day at Hemlock Lake

1Of all fair places sweet to stay
Upon a nasty rain day
Choose Idle Haven, Hemlock Lake
You’ll find it surely takes the cake.

2Deserted shores give forth once more
The sounds of joy and mirth of yore
As children in the by-gone days
Upon the shore thee torrent plays.

3Each wave which breaks upon the beach
To mind brings back the thrilling screech
Of Morton’s steamer and its swell
Which used to break the death-like spell.

23

4The splashing rain drops on the ground
Emit for all the world a sound
Just like the music of the knell
Rung by the St. James dinner bell.

5You sit high up above the lake
And gaze upon your own namesake
A ruffled angry storm-tossed sea
Reflecting mad despondency.

6The one bright thing that brings good cheer
Is when in doleful tones you hear
That “In a few days more or less
The fishing will be good I guess.”

7But then I thin that God is wise
To send the rain and darkened skys
For how would socks & clothes of mine
Get mended in the bright sunshine.

8Whenever signs of deep unrest
Proceed a flood of fiercer zest
Someone with deep forcasting power
Proclaims it just “a clear up shower.”

24

9So goes the day as hour by hour
We watch the ever coming shower
Until the creeping shadows show
The sun has passed to rest below
The hill behind of cottage home.
We cease to watch the dancing foam
The waves have piled upon the shore;
Their white is hidden by the pour
Of softer light through cottage pane
And back to rest we sink again
While on the roof the heavy sky
Keeps up its constant lullaby.

Mrs. B’s effusion -

Twas a rainy day at Idle Haven
But hearts were light within its walls
The winsome lads and lassies laden
With happiness which never falls
So though it pours or drops or drizzles
Joy reigns supreme despite the misle.

July 21 - Tuesday - CRS left for Wellsville on wheel. Piano arrived.
