Wayland - Guy B. Bennett, Sr., 103, of 126 Lincoln St., passed away peacefully on Friday, May 14, 1999.
Mr. Bennett was born Nov. 21, 1895 in Wayland, a son of Albert Guy and Bertha (Bowles) Bennett.
Guy attended the Union Free District School, graduating in 1915. He studied mechanical drawing and machine shop at RIT, then transferred to Cornell University and joined the Air Force in 1917. He was the last surviving WWI veteran in the Wayland area and was named Chevalier of the National Order of the Legion of Honor, France’s highest award. During his tour of duty he served as a mechanic in France and was honorably discharged on June 12, 1919 from Co. 19, 1st Air Service Mechanics Regiment. Guy and his brother, Homer, started Bennett Brothers in 1919 as an automobile repair shop. The Buick franchise was awarded on July 1, 1922. He was predeceased by his brother Homer on Nov. 23, 1970. The business has continued as Bennett’s Buick-Chevrolet-Olds Corp with his son and grandsons at the helm.
He married Mildred Sisson on Sept. 24, 1923, she predeceased him on Feb. 8, 1951. They had two children, Marion S. Johnson and Guy B. Bennett Jr., Marion passed away on Sept. 25, 1994. Guy married Clara (Seward) Mack on Dec. 29, 1951; she predeceased him on June 6, 1975.
Guy served 28 years as the Wayland School Board president, Wayland High School from 1932-45, and at the Wayland Central School from 1945-60. He was a Boy Scout Commissioner in 1934 and the president of the Wayland Rotary Club in 1957-58. He was a member of the Dansville Pilots Association, Dansville VFW, Wayland American Legion, Wayland United Methodist Church, the Golden Agers and has a life membership in the Wayland Historical Society.
Guy is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Guy and Anita (Brooks) Bennett Jr., of Wayland; six grandchildren, Guy Brooks Bennett, Joanne (David) Sawdey, James (Barbara) Bennett, all of Wayland, Dr. Suzanne Johnson (Dr. Nathan Perry) of Archer, Fla., Dr. Carl Nils Johnson (Dr. Deborah Landen) of Pittsurgh, PA and Peter Lars (Gail) Johnson of Gainesville, Fla.; 13 great-grandchildren, Kristin, Elisa Brooke, Samantha, Zachary, Ryan, Elyse, Erika, Marissa, Eve, Jeremy, Justin, Julie and Jessica; his son-in-law, Carl E. Johnson; four nieces and one nephew, Jean Marie (Bennett) Huey, Beverly (Sisson) Evans, Ruth Sisson, Barbara Sisson and Lyle Sisson Jr.
Friends may call at the Walter E. Baird & Sons Funeral Home, 100 E. Naples St., Wayland. Funeral services were held on Tuesday at the United Methodist Church in Wayland with Rev. Osceola Wharton Officiating. Burial with full military honors was in the Village Cemetery, Wayland.

Mrs. Clara Mack Bennett of 126 Lincoln St., Wayland, well-known author, die in Noyes Memorial Hospital Friday (June 6, 1975). She was 76.
Mrs. Bennett was a native of Springwater and had lived in this area all her life. She was the author of “Thoughts of a Country Woman” and “Easy Verses,” two books of poetry. For many years, she also wrote a column for the Wayland Register.
She was a member of Wayland Chapter 499, Order of the Eastern Star, the Rochester Poetry Society, the Wayland United Methodist Church and its Women’s Society and of the Wayland Lowell Club.
Mrs. Bennett was also active in Clara Barton American Red Cross Chapter. She had served several years as chairman of the unit’s Wayland Branch. In the summer of 1963, she and Mrs. Schuyler B. Pratt went abroad and visited in Geneva, Switzerland, during the centennial year of the International Red Cross which was founded in that city. They reported on that visit at a chapter meeting following their return. Mrs. Bennett also was a member of the Wayland American Legion Auxiliary.
Surviving are her husband, Guy Bennett Sr.; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Marion Johnson of Binghamton; a stepson, Guy B. Bennett Jr. of Wayland; six grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Melva Snyder and Mrs. Lucille Bartlett of Springwater; three brothers, Harold and Arthur Seward of Springwater and Horace Seward of Lakeville.
A funeral service was conducted in the Baird Funeral Home, Wayland, Monday afternoon. Burial was in Wayland Village Cemetery.
