John was born at home in Springwater, New York.
John married Fay Gowen on 19 August 1956 at the Springwater Methodist Church at Springwater, Livingston, New York. They were the parents of four children.
At age 18 John was employed by Delco Products in Rochester, NY. He retired 30 years later at just age 48 with a General Motors pension.
He was drafted into the US Army in 1958. John and Fay lived at Herlong Army base in Herlong, CA until he was honorably discharged 16 March, 1960.
After being discharged from the army John and Fay returned to Springwater, purchased a house from former Valley News owners Donald and Bernice Schuyler in June of 1960 and started raising a family. John resumed working at Delco.
After John retired in 1983 he and Fay purchased a home two blocks from the Atlantic ocean at Neptune Beach, Florida where they lived the remainder of their lives.
John died at home three weeks before his 60th birthday.
John was cremated. The majority of his ashes were released into the Atlantic Ocean and some were placed at the First Christian Church memorial garden.

Fay Duffy, age 68, died November 16, 2006, surrounded by her family.
Born in Sanford, Maine, her family moved to Springwater, NY in 1947.
She married John Duffy in 1956 and in 1958 was living in Herlong, CA at Herlong Army base with her husband. They returned to Springwater in 1960 after John’s discharge from the Army and started raising a family.
Fay was the weekly organist at Springwater Methodist church, and was an employee at the Springwater Post Office.
Fay and John relocated to Neptune Beach, FL in 1983 after John’s retirement from General Motors Corporation. She then became the secretary of the First Christian Church of the Beaches where she worked until her passing.
Fay died peacefully at the Baptist Medical Center Beaches in Jacksonville Beach, FL.
She was survived by a sister, June, a brother Carl, four children, four grandchildren and twelve nieces and nephews.
Fay was cremated. The majority of her ashes were released into the Atlantic Ocean with some being placed in the memorial garden of the First Christian Church of Neptune Beach, Florida.
