William Harder, familiarly known as “Deacon” Harder, passed away at his home on the Jacques Hill road last Saturday. He had been in declining health for several months and death came due to the debilities of old age
Mr. Harder was the son of William and Katherine Harder and was born in the old log-house which long stood near the site of his late home. The original family came from Canajoharie in 1828 and settled the land immediately west of Hemlock lake. The selection of the higher location was made because of the fear of fever and ague which prevailed among settlers on the lowlands. Mr. Harder lived for eighty ears within a half-mile of the house in which he died, and four generations of his family were born in the log homestead.
He had been deacon of the Baptist church at Hemlock for the full term of his membership, thirty-two years. His entire life was one of active service for his church, whose offices he filled with fidelity and thoroughness.
Three children, Mrs. Robert Patchin of Detroit, Mrs. George Knapp and Gideon Harder of Hemlock survive him; also two sisters, Mrs. Mary Dixon of California and Mrs. H. N. Jerome of Livonia Center, and one brother George Harder.
Funeral services were held from his late residence Tuesday afternoon, the Rev. Mr. Rice of South Livonia officiating. Interment was made in the Harder Cemetery.

Mrs. Anna Amelia Turner Harder, widow of William Harder, passed away at the home of her step-daughter, Mrs. George E. Knapp, last Friday evening, January 4. Mrs. Harder would have been 80 years of age had she lived until April. She was born in the town of Livonia and had always made her home in the town. Mrs. Harder had made her home with Mrs. Knapp for a little more than three years, and although in failing health she had been able to sit up until almost the last afternoon of her life. Death was due to hardening of the arteries and a goitre, which pressed against her heart.
Both she and her parents and grandparents were life-long members of the local Baptist church (which she always attended as long as health and strength permitted), and the funeral was held from the edifice Monday at 2 p.m. The Rev. C. E. Vickert had charge of the services with the Rev. G. H. Nelson, pastor of the M. e. church, assisting, and interment was in the Harder cemetery.
Mrs. Harder is survived by one son, Gideon of Hemlock, two daughters, Mrs. G. E. Knapp of Hemlock and Mrs. Robert Patchin of Detroit, Mich.; six grandchildren and two great great-grandchildren.
