A Short Biography of Ruth VanScooter McAfee

Ruth McAfee was born in Springwater to Scott and Bertha Howard Van Scooter. As a teenager, she worked as a cook and housekeeper on the Sherwood farm in Retsof in the town of York. There she met her future husband, Earl McAfee.

The McAfees had five daughters, Rosemary (who died in infancy), Jean, Kathy, Mary, and Bonnie, and one son, Bob. The family lived in Retsof, then moved to York Road East in 1950.

After her husband died in 1966, Ruth McAfee supported her family by working as a custodian and an in-home aide.

Ruth was a long time member and former deacon of the York United Presbyterian Church, and served as a volunteer there for over 30 years. She was also a volunteer with the York Towners group and a member of the York Fire Department Ladies’ Auxiliary. Each year, she operated popular booths at the fireman’s carnival. She also wrote a social news column for the “Livingston County News.”

In 2004, Ruth was recognized by the Livingston County Office for the Aging as the York Senior Citizen of the Year. At age 88, in 2012, she moved into the Avon Nursing Home, and resided there until she died in 2015.

According to her family, Ruth McAfee enjoyed gifting homemade baked treats and strawberry jam to relatives. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and is remembered by them as a loyal, direct, and caring person.

In honor of Women’s History Month, the Livingston County Historian’s Office recognizes Ruth (Van Scooter) McAfee (1924-2015).

Ruth E. McAfee, 91, of York, died Sunday, October 25, 2015 at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, NY. Ruth had been a resident of the Avon Nursing Home for the last 3 years.

She was predeceased by her husband Earl and infant daughter Rosemary.

She is survived by her children, Jean (Thomas) Paxton of Rochester, Kathleen (Daniel) Brown of South Lima, Mary (David) Watson of Bergen, Bonnie (Raymond) Otto of Rochester, Robert (Claudia) McAfee of Piffard, many grandchildren, great grandchildren, her sister, Mildred Stone of Mt. Morris, sister in law Beverly Van Scooter of Websters Crossing, dear friend, Norma Geary of York, many nieces and nephews.

Ruth was born February 18, 1924 in Springwater, NY the daughter of Scott and Bertha Howard Van Scooter. She was a longtime member and former Deacon at the York United Presbyterian Church where she also served as custodian for many years. Ruth was also a former member of the York Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.

Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, October 28, 2015 at 11 AM at the York United Presbyterian Church, 2662 Main St.in York with Rev. Michelle Sumption officiating.

Burial will follow in Pleasant Valley Cemetery in York NY.
