Mrs. Addie Saunders, wife of W. L. Saunders of South Lima, died at the home of her son, Dr. Saunders, at Hornell on the 13th inst.
She was born at St. Catherines, Canada, her father being a Methodist clergyman [Reverend William Jackson]. She was left an orphan when quite young, and was adopted, or taken into a family in Canada. The family was harsh and exacting towards her, and consequently she did not secure the opportunity for education, etc., that her refined and sensitive nature craved; but the indomitable will, which always characterized her, enabled her to rise above some of the obstacles that were placed in her way, and which helped her to form the thoroughly energetic and capable she afterward became.
Some years after her marriage to Mr. Saunders they moved to Rochester, where for several years she closely identified with the interests and work of the Corn Hill Methodist Church.
About 18 years ago they moved to South Lima, where Mr. Saunders was one of the pioneer celery growers. About this time the Union church society was formed, and soon plans were made for a new church. Mrs. Saunders spared neither time, money nor energy to carry on and complete the work.
She had wonderful executive ability, and to her earlier experience in the city churches, combined with her Christian, forceful character, was largely due to the success which attended the work later, when the Union church was changed to the Presbyterian, she was still a staunch supporter of it.
A few weeks previous to her death she started and had gotten well underway a subscription for putting on an addition to the church. South Lima will be profited in so many ways by having come in touch with such a thoroughly Christian, capable woman, whose whole heart and life had been devoted to her church and family, and her death will mean a serious loss to the church and community.
