Mrs. Clarissa Short died recently in Manchester, Ontario county, at the age of 74 years. She was a sister of the late Dr. Willard Doolittle of Richmond.
Port Gibson - Mrs. Clarissa Doolittle Short departed this life Sept. 8th, 1879, aged 73 years. She had suffered many months from a complication of diseases; the final cause of her death was a difficulty of the heart.
Having been for several years a widow, she resided with her son Seneca M. Short on the old homestead near this place. All that tender devoted hands could do to bless and cheer the sunset of her earthly life was done.
By both birth and marriage Mrs. Short belonged to honorable and wealthy families. The little fortune she possessed however seemed of value to her, only as she had opportunity to “lend” it to the Lord. But to the church of which she was so long an honored member, to the community in which she lived and died; to the sons and daughters who so gladly ministered to her necessities; she has left a heritage more precious than gold, that of a pure and noble life and an unsullied Christian character.
She was buried from the Baptist church at Plainville - where she held her membership - Sept. 10th, p.m., after an excellent practical sermon by the pastor. Many sorrowing friends followed the beautiful remains to their quiet resting place, and the autumn winds sighing a solemn requium over the dead, the changing forest and the flowers that draped the altar with their white loveliness, reminded us though the “grass withereth and the flower fadeth, the word of the Lord abideth forever.”
And so we leave her, committed soul and body to Him who hath said, “I am the Resurrection and the Life.”
