Truman S. Stevens, 59, former welfare commissioner of Ontario County, died suddenly in an automobile in West Henrietta Road last evening. Death was believed due to a heart attack.
At the time of his death he was accompanied by his wife and his son, Edward, who was driving. They were on their way home to Canandaigua after a visit to Rochester. When he collapsed in the car Mrs. Stevens applied first aid methods and his son summoned an ambulance from the Strong Memorial Hospital, but Mr. Stevens was dead when the ambulance arrived. The body was taken to the Monroe County Morgue and later to the Stevens home at Parish Street, Canandaigua.
Mr. Stevens retired Jan. 1 as welfare commissioner after serving for three and one-half years. He had been in poor health for some time and the increased work of the Welfare Department in the last few years had proved a heavy burden for him. Previous to being appointed welfare commissioner he had served for a number of years as supervisor of the Town of Richmond. He was one of the organisers of the Hemlock Masonic Lodge.
He was succeeded as welfare commissioner by Harry K. Dibble of Ionia, former supervisor of the Town of West Bloomfield.
Besides his wife and son, Mr. Stevens leaves two daughters, Mrs. Sayre Beam and Mrs. Clayton Harvey of Hemlock.
