John B. Stillwell (1828) was born in Henrietta; he was eight years old when his family came to Hemlock. He was a harness maker. He married Rachel E. Kelleman (1834-1872) and they had one son: Charles (1856).
John served during the Civil War as a drummer in Co. D of the 188th New York Infantry. He enlisted at Livonia on August 30, 1864 and was discharged from the hospital at Philadelphia on May 19, 1865. His enlistment paper describes him as being five feet, eleven inches tall, with black eyes and hair, with a “dark” complexion.
Rachel died April 12, 1872 and is buried in Hemlock Cemetery. John continued to live in Hemlock until about 1880 when he and his son Charles moved to Rochester, where he is found on the 1892 and 1905 Censuses. In the autumn of 1905 he took up residence in the National Veterans Home in Bath (Steuben County). He died there December 5, 1910 and is buried at the National Cemetery in Bath NY.
