The Obituary of Joseph Tague

1818 - 30 January 1894

From the Livonia Gazette, 9 February 1894

Canadice - Joseph Tague, one of our oldest and most respected citizens, has gone to his reward.

Mr. Tague came to this town in 1836 from Orange county, N.Y., in company with the late James B. Sayre, being then 16 years old.

In 1846 he married Barbara Struble and commenced housekeeping near the corners. He was then a member of the Methodist church. From that time to the present he has had the care of the church and for over thirty years has been a class leader and one of the official board. Always kind and obliging, he was a friend to all.

He was appointed postmaster under President Lincoln and held the office during the adminsitrations of Lincoln, Grant, Hayes, Garfield, Arthur and Harrison. He worked at his trade, that of a blacksmith, until about two years ago. Failing health compelled him to discontinue it. Through long weeks of feebleness his faith never faltered, but as earthly scenes faded and grew dim to his gaze his hope was as an anchor to the soul.

An aged companion, two daughters and a whole community, mourn his death.

The funeral services were held at the church on Thursday.

Canadice - Mrs. Barbara Tague died on the 5th inst., after an illness of only a week. She was born in Sussex County, N.J., in 1819, and came to this town with her parents in 1833, having lived here ever since.

She was united in marriage to Joseph Tague of this town in 1845.

Over fifty years ago she joined the church here and has lived a consistent Christian life, ever ready to lend a helping hand to the sick and suffering. She will truly be missed.
