Died at his residence in Springwater Monday, Aug. 20th, John Weidman, aged 60 years, 9 months and 4 days. Again the reaper death has found its way into the midst of the people of Springwater, and taken from among them one of their most honored and respected citizens.
The death of this Christian gentleman was a severe blow not only to his friends but to the community at large, and we may truly say that no man in that place will be more generally missed than he.
For months past he has been in very poor health, but he rallied and seemed to grow better, and his friends had hopes that his life might be prolonged. About two weeks ago he had a relapse, and he gradually went down until his feet pressed the water’s edge, and he passed over the river. The immediate cause of death was dropsy of the heart, and all through the long night of suffering and anguish before he died he never murmured nor complained. His trust was in God.
Mr. Weidman was born in 1827, in the town of Sparta, on the farm now occupied by J. J. Weidman. He was married to Mary A. Hartman, who survives him. Ten children were born to them, six of whom are living - Andrew R., Joel H., Mrs Mary V. Swarts, John A., Jay K., and Mark H., all of whom were present at his last illness.
Early in life Mr. Weidman embraced religion, and has continued an active and faithful Christian ever since. Always liberal whenever called upon, he took an especial delight in contributing toward the cause of religion. His abilities as a Sunday-school teacher were rare, and he has labored unceasingly for years in the cause, never stopping until his health failed. At one time he was Superintendent of three Sunday-schools and these schools being several miles apart. This was no easy task. However, this seemed to be a delightful work for him, and his whole life was made up of good and noble deeds. His fidelity as a father, and unwearied kindness as a husband is left as a priceless legacy to his family. He has discharged the trusts committed to his care with fidelity and satisfaction, and his friends lay at rest the remains of an upright man and a sincere and faithful Christian.
Mr. Weidman was one of a family of twelve children and the third one to die after having lived an unbroken family for fifty years. Reuben Whiteman died in March, Edward Whiteman died in June, and now the circle is again broken and death has claimed another. The funeral services were held from his late residence on Wednesday, the 22d, at one o’clock. The floral decorations were all beautiful, and were prepared by kind and loving hands. The Rev. Keller preached from the text, “And by it He being dead yet speaketh,” Hebrews 11:4. There was a brief address by Rev. Hunter, of Springwater and the singing was done by the choir of Springwater. After the services the remains were laid at rest in the cemetery at Springwater.
The bearers were Edward Traxler, Geo. Sams, of Dansville; J. B. Wilhelm, W. H. Norton, William Brewer, of Springwater; Ira Lawrence, Parney Hollow.
