Hemlock - One of those occasions which brings joy and sunshine to human hearts, amidst the dreary waste of life, occurred on Thursday afternoon of last week, when some of the neighbors and friends of Mrs. Huldah Wemett surprised her with a “call” on the occasion of her birthday.
On the date above mentioned a number of the lady friends of Mrs. Wemett, wishing to manifest their appreciation of as well as their esteem for her, gathered en masse at her residence (in all about seventeen or thereabouts), which so astonished that lady that she was completely bewildered.
The time was passed in social converse until about 5:50 o’clock, when supper was announced. The Rev. Mr. Raymond, who happened to call in just previously, was requested to remain, and when all were seated at the table, he, on behalf of those assembled, in a few well-chosen words, presented Mrs. Wemett a beautiful silver pickle-caster as a slight token of affectionate regard. This was the coup de grace. The recipient could only murmur forth her thanks, while all present were visibly affected. It was a complete, successful surprise. After doing ample justice to the bountiful repast the company, wishing many happy returns of the day, dispersed to their respective homes.
To Mrs. Minnie Hoppough and Mrs. Frankie Wemett the thanks of all are due for their share in planning and conducting the surprise.
