John Wilhelm, who had lived most of his life in Conesus and Sparta, died at Highland, Michigan, Saturday, where he had gone to spend the winter with a daughter. His death was a surprise to many as he appeared to be able to withstand the ravages of time for a few years longer at least.
Mr. Wilhelm was born in Milo, Yates county, NY in 1818, and he came to the town of Sparta with his parents when ten years old. He lived in that town until 1843 when he was married to Miss Leora Humphrey, and soon after he bought a farm in the town of Conesus on which he resided until within a few years, since which time he has made his home in Sparta with his daughter Mrs. W. H. Kiehle, spending his winters in Michigan.
His wife died some years ago. He had eight children, six of whom are living: Mrs. Emily Hulbert of Highland, Michigan, with whom her father spent his last days, having gone there only three weeks before his death; Sidney Wilhelm of Saganaw, Michigan; Mrs. W. H. (Elsie) Kiehle of Sparta; Solon Wilhelm of Omaha, Nebraska; Eugene Wilhelm now living on the home farm in Conesus; Mrs. Martha Webb of Battle Creek, Michigan. He also leaves ten grand-children and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral was held yesterday afternoon at the home of his daughter Mrs. W. H. Kiehle, Rev. R. E. Brettle of Scottsburg officiating, and he was buried in the Clark Cemetery in Sparta.
