Lucius M. Doolittle and Lucy A. Winch

Lucy A. Winch and Lucius M. Doolittle were married on the 5 September 1888. This photo of them was taken circa 1910. They lived in Canadice NY and had four children; three daughters, Alice, Mary and Martha and a son Amasa who died as an infant. Their daughters were given the same names as Lucy’s older sisters who all died as children.

Lucius was a teacher in Canadice and was also the town clerk. Lucy was also a teacher in Canadice.

The Obituary of Lucius M. Doolittle

18 November 1856 - 22 February 1921

Canadice - Lucius M. Doolittle, aged 64 years, died at his home in this place on 22 February 1921. He has been seriously ill for about three weeks, but the immediate cause of death was a shock which he had the Friday night previous.

Mr. Doolittle was born in Canadice, and had lived his entire life there. He was a grandson of Thomas Doolittle, one of the pioneers of the town.

In former days Mr. Doolittle held many positions of honor and trust in the church and community. He was Justice of the Peace at the time of his death.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lucy Winch Doolittle; three daughters, Mrs. Alice Kingsley, of Victor; Mrs. Mary Paine, of this place, and Mrs. Martha Speiller, of Brooklyn, and eleven grandchildren; three brothers, Elmer Doolittle, of Rochester; John Doolittle, of Ellicottville, and Thomas W. Doolittle, of Naples; four sisters, Mrs. Emily Norget, of Allens Hill; Mrs. Cleora Blake, of Naples; Mrs. Carrie West, of Lakeville, and Miss Zeruah Doolittle, of Rochester, at present in Florida. All the brothers and sisters were present at the funeral, except Miss Zeruah Doolittle.

The funeral services were held from the church on Thursday, February 24, 1921, at 2 p.m., Rev. G. C. Bucher, of Spencerport, a former pastor, officiating, assisted by Rev. Guy Overshire, the present pastor.

Burial was made in the family lot in Canadice cemetery. The floral pieces on the casket were many and beautiful.

A kind husband and father, a good neighbor and citizen, has left us.

Mr. Paine, of West Barre; Rev. E. W. Hargrave and wife of Charlotte; Mr. and Mrs. Jacobs, of Wayland; Edwin Doolittle and wife, of Springwater; George Deal and wife, of Allens Hill; Fred Kingsley and wife and Mrs. Truman Stevens, of Richmond; John Beam and wife and Miss Ester Andrus, of Hemlock, and Dr. Leigh Norget, of Henreitta, were some of the relatives and friends who came from a distance to attend Mr. Doolittle’s funeral.

Canadice, NY - A very sudden death occurred last Sunday morning in the passing away of Mrs. Lucy Doolittle at the age of 69 years with apoplexy. In 1888 she was united in marriage to Lucius Doolittle, whose death occurred six years ago. To them four children were born. A son, who passed away in infancy, and the three daughters who survive her are Mrs. Walter Kingsley of Victor, Mrs. Martha Spiller of Flushing, L. I., and Mrs. Leslie Paine, with whom she made her home, and a number of grandchildren. Mrs. Doolittle was a woman of sterling character and a member of the Methodist church and had always resided here. She was the daughter of the late Masey T. and Elizabeth Winch. The services were held Tuesday at the church at 2 o’clock and interment was made in the family lot at Canadice. The Rev. Shergur officiated.
