George E. Knapp, for the past twenty-eight year a merchant in Hemlock, died very suddenly at 10 o’clock Thursday morning of this week at his residence. Mr. Knapp had been afflicted with asthma for nine years, and for the past week had been confined to the house. His death, however, was entirely unexpected. He suffered a bad spell Wednesday night, and his death followed about twelve hours later.
Mr. Knapp was born in Couymans, Albany county, November 30, 1868. In May of 1900 he went to Hemlock, and with his brother-in-law, C. H. Holley, now of East Rochester, took over the store which was being conducted by John Coykendall. The firm name was Knapp & Holley. This partnership continued for five years, when Mr. Holley came to Livonia and Mr. Knapp assumed the ownership and management of the store himself. Since that time he had continued in the business at Hemlock.
Mr. Knapp was a member of the school board, and had been continuously for the last sixteen years. He had held membership for twenty-two years in Onehda lodge of Odd Fellows, of which he was a past grand. He was a past superintendent of the Methodist Sunday school and at the time of his death a member of the official board.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mary Harder Knapp, of Hemlock, whom he married in 1905; one son, Elbert; three sisters, Mrs. John Finley of Hoag’s Corners, Mrs. James Green of Cohoes and Mrs. William Lobdell of Dunham Hollow; two brothers, Elbert of Troy and William of Rotterdam.
The funeral services will be held at the residence Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock and interment will be in Woodbine cemetery, Sand Lake, near Albany.
