Lakeville Volunteer Fireman Dies Attempting to

Save Trapped Wife as Historic Stage Coach Inn Burns

From the Livingston Republican, 8 June 1950.

Returning from safety into blazing Lakeville Inn early Sunday morning to rescue his trapped wife Alton Arthur Van Ingen, 56, died of smoke, burns and shock when he collapsed at the second floor window after helping his wife onto a ladder at the window.

Fire, which broke out sometime between 2:30 and 5:30 o’clock Sunday morning, was blazing fiercely when discovered by Mrs. Walter Van Ingen, wife of the owner, when she awoke at 5:30 to feed her four weeks old baby, Gary.

Her husband, “Red,” helped his wife and child to safety from the second floor room on the east end of the hotel wing and then ran to arouse his parents and Joseph Buchanan of Groveland, bartender, who had rooms on the northwest end of the hotel’s second floor.

Neighbors reported that the elder Van Ingen succeeded in reaching the street but re-entered the blazing building when he discovered his wife had not followed to safety and was trapped in their room. A ladder was placed against the north end of the building and Mr. Van Ingen helped his wife onto it before collapsing over the sill.

Lakeville firemen attempted to reach him but were twice driven back by flames and dense smoke and Alonzo Richardson, Lakeville garage man and fireman, finally was able to bring the unconscious man down the ladder but he died before medical treatment could be rendered by Dr. Tracy Swan of Livonia.

Mr. Buchanan leaped from his window and sprained his ankle in the jump.

Chief Donald Rosborough of the Lakeville fire Department said later examination showed the fire had burned most seriously near the television set. He said it was possible that the set had not been turned off and may have shorted and started the blaze.

Early Swim for Local Man

From the Livonia Gazette, March 1956

Alonzo Richardson probably is eligible for the distinction of being the first swimmer of the 1956 season. In removing a fallen tree from the outlet near the entrance to the Progressive Foundry plant, he landed in the outlet rather than in the boat. However, after a hasty trip home and a change of clothes he was back on the job.

In the same operation his tow truck, which was pulling the tree and which was anchored to another tree on the shore, was turned over. Lynn Richardson, who was operating the winch, luckily escaped injury.

72 Year Old Man Saved from Icy Conesus Lake

From the Avon Herald, March 1966

According to Undersheriff Douglas C. Mills and Chief Deputy Douglas J. Welch, Otto Schlegel, 72, of 2225 East Lake Road, Conesus NY, was pulled from the ice cold water at Conesus Lake March 7th by Lakeville Firemen Alonzo Richardson and C. Acker Smith and members of the Sheriff’s Emergency Squad of the Lakeville Fire Department after a 30 minute stay in the water.

Michael Cosgrove, 14, of 2208 East Lake Road, was burning trash when he heard crys for help and saw Mr. Schlegel in the water. With the assistance of his mother and Mr. Charles Coburn of Sliker Hill Road, Conesus, he placed ladders on the ice, crawled out on the ladders and hung onto Mr. Schlegel’s wrists until the Emergency Squad and Deuputies arrived.

Assisting at the scene were Sheriff’s Sgt. Arthur N. Farrell and Deputies Patrick F. Gillen and Thomas Galbraith. Mr. Schlegel was treated at the scene by Dr. Robert Yannowitch of Conesus Lake Medical Center and sent to the Thompson Memorial Hospital, Canandaigua.

He had been fishing out on the lake, and was walking back to his cottage, when he broke through the ice.

Cosgrove said he remembered from his Boy Scout training how to save a person who had gone through the ice and it was for him to extend the ladder.
