Alexander Smart, for many years a resident of Wayland and vicinity, died at his home in this village at an early hour Friday morning at the age of 66 years. He suffered a shock a year ago the 30th of last June and since that time, had been gradually failing in health.
Mr. Smart was born at Burlington Green, Otsego county, June 28th, 1853. He came to Loon Lake with his parents when quite young, where he continued to reside until about ten years ago when he came to this village to live.
On Jan. 1, 1879, he was married to Miss Carrie A. Whitman of the town of South Dansville. To them were born five daughters and one son.
Surviving him are his wife and four daughters — Mrs. Ernest Walker, Mrs. Lena Magin, Mrs. Leona Holmes, and Miss Anna who resides at home. He is also survived by a half brother, George Wright of Hornell, and a half sister, Mrs. Hattie Green of Arkport.
The funeral was held at the home Monday afternoon at 1:00 o’clock and at 1:30 at the United Evangelical church, Rev. Mr. Teter officiating. The burial was at Loon Lake.

Mrs. Carrie Smart, a life long and well known resident of this section, died Sunday night at her home on East Naples street, aged 71 years.
Mrs. Smart was born in the town of Fremont in 1857, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Calvin P. Whitman, who were descendants of Marcus Whitman.
On June 1st, 1879, she was married to Alexander Smart and they made their home in the town of South Dansville until they came to this village to reside about seventeen years ago. Mr. Smart’s death occurred eight years ago last April.
Mrs. Smart is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Maude Walker, Mrs. Lena Magin, Mrs. Leona Holmes and Mrs. Anna Last, all of Wayland; also by thirteen grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Funeral services were held at the home yesterday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock, Rev. C.A. Whitehead officiating, and burial was in Lake View cemetery.
