Thomas Sonne moved from Warren, PA to the Warsaw, NY area with his family during childhood.
Thomas married Sara Fisher of Springwater, NY on 2 July 1938 at the Gothic Chapel at Alfred University. The ceremony was performed by Reverend Dr. Bond.
In 1938 Thomas was employed at the Physical Health Hotel in Dansville, New York, which was owned by Bernard Mac Fadden.
Thomas became Dr. Thomas R. Sonne after attending Tulsa University, the University of Cornell and the University of Buffalo.
Thomas started working for the Veterans Administration at Buffalo, NY in 1946 where he was chief of the counseling and training section of the VA from 1948 until 1963. He helped recovering veterans prepare for and find jobs.
In 1963 Thomas became the chief counseling psychologist at the Veterans Administrative Facility at Canandaigua, New York. He was president of the Group Psychotherapy Association of Western New York. He was Professional Advisory board member of the Erie County Mental Health Association. He was New York state chairman for the Mental Health of the Congress of Parents and Teachers. He was a faculty member at Canisius College in Buffalo.
Thomas also had a private counseling practice at Canandaigua.
Thomas and his wife Sara had one child, Christina (Tina).
Thomas was buried in the Woodlawn Cemetery in Canandaigua NY.

Sara was born at home at Springwater, Livingston, New York.
Sara attended Alfred College and was a teacher at various rural schools in Livingston County, NY.
