Henry M. Wheaton was born in Prattsburgh, Steuben County, New York, USA to Samuel W. Wheaton and Susanna Kingsley Wheaton in 1846 and lived his childhood in Springwater NY.
He was a Civil War veteran who died at the Siege of Petersburg in 1864.
At the age of 18 years he married Mary L. Wilkinson of Cohocton, NY just prior to joining the New York Infantry to fight in the American Civil War.
Henry died of wounds combined with typhoid fever at City Point, which was a town in Prince George County, Virginia that was annexed by the independent city of Hopewell in 1923.
City Point served as headquarters of General Grant of the Union Army during the Siege of Petersburg.
Henry enlisted on 22 August 1864 and was mustered in on 1 October 1864 as a private with the 189th Regiment, New York Infantry G at Cohocton, Steuben, New York.
He was pronounced dead a the City Point Hospital, Virginia on 12 December 1864.
He is buried at the City Point National Cemetery at Hopewell City, Virginia.
