Hemlock - Edwin H. Westbrook, 75, of Hemlock, known only, however, as “Ed,” an official of the Hemlock Fair association for fifty-five consecutive years, and president for twelve years, died at his home early Friday morning, after a few days’ illness. He had been in failing health all summer, and a complication of troubles caused his death, though pneumonia developed at the last. It seemed a coincidence that Mr. Westbrook’s death should occur during the time of the Hemlock fair, in which he had always been so active and which he had attended every year since a mere lad. He was honorary vice-president of the Hemlock Lake Union Agricultural society at the time of his death.
Mr. Westbrook was the son of Walter and Antoinette Densmore Westbrook (1) and was born in Canadice in 1864. His family moved to Hemlock when he was a small boy. He married Miss Carrie Short of Hemlock in 1890.
Funeral services were held at the home Sunday afternoon at 3 o’clock, the Rev. Ernest Riemer of Wyoming, NY, a former pastor of the Hemlock Baptist church and member of the Hemlock Odd Fellows, officiating.
The burial in Union cemetery, Livonia, was in charge of the Hemlock Odd Fellows Lodge of which Mr. Westbrook was a charter member. The bearers were Odd Fellows W. W. Hoppough, O. A. Beam, O. W. Locke, Bird Naracong, John Clark, and C. E. Wemett.
Mr. Westbrook took a keen interest in educational work in Hemlock and had served on the school board continuously from 1911, with the exception of two years. He was president of the board for about fifteen years.
Mr. Westbrook was chairman of the Republican town committee for a number of years and served as county committeeman for more that forty years. He was a former member of the town board, a former member of the Hemlock Grange and a past noble grand of the Hemlock I.O.O.F. He had also been a member of the Livonia Masonic Lodge for more than forty years.
A very fitting tribute was paid Mr. Westbrook by Frank Lowell, starting judge, from the judges’ stand at the fair, Saturday afternoon just before the races took place.
(1) Editor’s note: Edwin’s mother was Antoinette “Sarah” Densmore Westbrook.
