The Snyder Homestead in Springwater NY

1

A photo showing the burning of Alonzo Snyder’s residence at Springwater NY in 1908. The reason for the fire is not now known. The house was built in 1833 by David Grover. The Springwater map of 1872 shows that “A. Snyder” owned a house on South Main Street and much land to the west. The Springwater map of 1902 shows that “Mrs. A. Snyder” owned a house at the corner of Lowe Avenue and South Main Street. Photographed by Johnson.

Fire Destroys Alonzo Snyder House

From the Cohocton Index, 8 May 1908

Springwater - At about 8 o’clock last Thursday morning, fire was discovered in the residence on South Main street, known as the Snyder Homestead.

It appears that it started from a defective chimney since Mr. Charles Hudson, a neighbor first noticed smoke issuing from the roof near the chimney on the back of the house.

For some time past the house has been rented and was usually occupied by two families. The unfortunate tenants who were occupying rooms at this time were Harrison Eldridge and James McDuff.

Mrs. McDuff gave a general alarm by telephone and it was not long before enough men from two fire companies were there and assisted in the removal of household goods. The fire had gained too much headway to be extinguished.

About all the furniture and effects on the first floor were removed but scarcely anything on the second floor was saved.

The goods were later removed to Concert Hall out of the rain which fell during the entire forenoon, and from there they will be removed to houses yet to be rented.

It is said that the house was insured.

This house was one of the first that was built in this village. It was erected over seventy-five years ago in the year 1833 by David H. Grover. It was afterwards purchased by Parker H. Pierce and occupied by him and his family until his death, which occurred about the year 1870. It was then sold to Alonzo Snyder, and was owned by his heirs.

Several fine views of the burning of the homestead were obtained by photographer, Johnson. Post card views may be purchased at the leading stores in town.
