The Stewart Barnett barn is one of the oldest barns in the Hemlock Canadice Lakes area.

BARN HEMLOCK BLACKMER GRAY
The Gray Wood Barn is located just north of the Hemlock village. It sits near the intersection of State Route 15A and Big Tree Road.

BARN HEMLOCK BLAKE WILLARD
The Blake Willard barns in Hemlock NY were built in the 1880's and are still a part of a working farm.

BARN HEMLOCK HARDER VARRONE
The Harder - Varrone barn is located at the intersection of Blank Road and Harder Road south of Hemlock village. Judging from historical maps the barn was probably built by W. Harder around 1865.

BARN HEMLOCK LINSLEY HANNA
The Linsley Hanna barns were located in Hemlock NY on Lindsley road to the west of the village. The farm was also owned by J. H. Adams. Wayne Hanna owned the farm during the 1930's and was on the Hemlock school Board of Education.

The Scott barns in Hemlock NY were a part of the Grange program in the 1950's.

BARN HEMLOCK SHORT THOMPSON
The Short - Thompson barn is located in Hemlock NY just north east of the village on Clay street.

BARN SPRINGWATER BECKER
The Becker barn is located about 2 miles south of the Springwater village on State Route 15. For a while it had the Blue Dog by George Rodrigue painted on its north facing wall.

BARN SPRINGWATER GUILES CONGE
The Guiles - Conge barn located in Springwater NY. The barn was built in 1840 on what was at the time a stage coach line. The land was deeded in 1884 to the Guiles family. The barn is in excellent condition with each of the four walls painted a different color.

BARN SPRINGWATER WITHINGTON TODISCO
The Withington - Todisco barn is located in Springwater NY on the flats south of the village. In the 1920's the farm was purchased by Leonard and Barbara Withington who maintained and improved the farm. Originally the barn was a part of the Miller homestead which can be seen on the 1926 map of Springwater.

BUSINESS CONESUS HOLISTIC HEALTH CENTER
In 1979 the Hemlock Lake Holistic Health Center opened its doors at Saint Michael's Mission in Conesus NY.

BUSINESS HEMLOCK 1812 COUNTRY STORE
Ruth Woodruff was the proprietor of the 1812 Country Store in Hemlock NY for twenty five years. The Rapelje's took over in 1985.

BUSINESS HEMLOCK BOOTS AND SADDLES
The Hemlock Boots and Saddles tavern was located on the east side of Main street in Hemlock NY. It was originally a cottage that was moved from Hemlock lake in 1920's to Main street. It was a store for a while but eventually became the Odd Fellows Building. In 1974 Steve DeAngelo purchased the building and turned it into the Boots and Saddles tavern.

BUSINESS HEMLOCK CANNING FACTORY
The Hemlock Canning Factory was located in Hemlock NY. It proceeded fruits and vegetables from local farms. There were two fires there, one in the 19xx's and the last in 19xx.

BUSINESS HEMLOCK FLYING SERVICE 0 INDEX
From 1928, for about ten years, there was a flying field in Hemlock NY. A hanger and air strip were maintained bye Dr. Harold W. Trott of Hemlock.

In 1931 one of the first helicopters arrived at the Hemlock Flying Field in Hemlock NY. The helicopter flew from Westchester county but was manufactured in Willow Grove Pennsylvania.

BUSINESS HEMLOCK FLYING SERVICE NEWS 1976 HEMLOCK TO CLEVELAND DERBY
Margaret Wemett in 1976 wrote a history of the Hemlock Flying Service which existed in Hemlock NY from 1928 to 1938.

BUSINESS HEMLOCK HALFWAY HOUSE
In 1885 the Hemlock Halfway House on Hemlock Lake was being reopened for business by George Fisher.

BUSINESS HEMLOCK JACQUES HOUSE
Circa 1835 Russell Jacques and Harriet Frances Jacques were living at the north end of Hemlock Lake NY. Later, people began coming to the farm house as summer boarders. It became so popular that the old house was soon outgrown, and in 1871 the building was enlarged and became the Jacques House so well known for may years.

BUSINESS HEMLOCK LEDCO MANUFACTURING
The LEDCO Laminating Machinery Company has been located in Hemlock NY since 1975. The business is still active and located there as of 2016.

BUSINESS HEMLOCK METROPOLITAN HOTEL 0 INDEX
The Metropolitan was opened as a hotel on Memorial Day, May 30, 1850. The south end of the building, which was the old original tavern, was erected about 1810.

BUSINESS HEMLOCK METROPOLITAN HOTEL NEWS 1961 CHANGES OWNERSHIP
The Metropolitan was purchased by Rudolph Johnson of Geneva in 1961. He purchased the hotel from the Haggerty family who owned and operated the hotel for 50 years, beginning in the 1880's.

BUSINESS HEMLOCK METROPOLITAN HOTEL NEWS 1977 FIRE DESTROYS HOTEL
In 1977 the landmark Metropolitan Hotel of Hemlock burned to the ground. The hotel had been in operation for 170 years.

BUSINESS HEMLOCK MORTON THURSTON HOTEL
The Morton Thurston Hotel was located at the Lehigh Railroad station in Hemlock NY. It was the same building which was owned by two different people.

BUSINESS HEMLOCK RED WHITE STORE
Earl and Ruth Collins spent much of their lives running the small Red and White Store in Hemlock. Now they reluctantly give it up.

BUSINESS HEMLOCK SCANLON HOTEL
The Scanlon Hotel was a small hotel in Hemlock NY. It was located just north of the mill stream that ran through the center of the village. The building was burned in 1970 by the fire department in a controlled burn.

BUSINESS HEMLOCK ST JAMES HOTEL
The St. James Hotel on Hemlock Lake NY opened for business in 1879 on the east shore of the lake at the north end. It was considered elegant for the time and had rooms for 60 guests.

BUSINESS SPRINGWATER CANNON MILLER COMPANY
The Cannon and Miller families moved to Springwater NY with their children in 1919 and began to manufacture earphone headsets.

BUSINESS SPRINGWATER CREAMERY
In 1887 a new creamery was organized in Springwater NY on Mill street at a cost of $8000.

BUSINESS SPRINGWATER DAVIS HAMILTON TREE FARM
In 1932 the original land for the farm was purchased by George and Arthur Davis after a fire destroyed the original home and 90 acres of land.

In 1947 Roy Gibson started planting potatoes on a 3 acre plot. He married Shirley Wixom, had a family and eventually was selling hundreds of acres of potatoes to Frito Lay.

The Grover Smoke and Barber shop was located in the Marvin Building on west Main street in Springwater NY.

The Hardware Store located at the four-corners in Springwater NY was owned by various proprietors. In 1951 it was opened by Sydney Clarke and was managed by Al Bulmer. In 1953-54 it was sold and in 1955 opened under the management of John E. Krist and W. J. Trimble. Then the building was taken over by the Schnuckers and became the Book and Antiques store.

In 1968 Katherine and Bill Humphrey started the All Western Evergreen Christmas Tree Farm. Since Bills death in 2009, the farm has been operated by Katherine with much help from her daughter Jerrianne and her family.

BUSINESS SPRINGWATER MILLER LURE COMPANY
Edmund J. Miller and Ethel Toale Miller moved to Springwater NY with their children in 1919. Edmund took up partnership with Charles Cannon and manufactured earphone headsets for ten years. Edmund then left the partnership and with his wife Ethel started the Miller Fishing Lure Co.

The Red and White store in Springwater NY was located on main street just north of the four corners. In the 1950's the store was owned and operated by the Haynes family.

The Schnucker's Books and Antique Store started in Springwater NY in 1959. It became a landmark in the center of the village.

BUSINESS SPRINGWATER SHAG HICKORY FARM
Circa 1880 Peter Burdick purchased about 150 acres and started farming. His son eventually took over the farm in about 1916. Finally, in 1967, Phillip and Patricia Willsea purchased the farm and made extensive improvements.

BUSINESS WEBSTERS CROSSING GRANDVIEW DAIRY
The Grandview Dairy in Webster's Crossing NY was a member of the Conesus Milk Producers Cooperative Association. The Cooperative also had associations with dairies in Lakeville, Nunda, Cuba and Prattsburg.

CEMETERY CANADICE BALD HILL
The Bald Hill cemetery is located on private property on the west side of State Route 15-A just south of Purcell Hill Road. It is overgrown with brush and in poor condition. Many stones are toppled and many illegible.

CEMETERY CANADICE CORNERS
The Canadice Corners Hill cemetery is located next the Methodist Church in Canadice NY at the intersection of County Road 37 and Canadice Hill Road.

CEMETERY CANADICE HOLLOW
The Canadice Hollow Cemetery is located approximately 3 miles south of Hemlock village. From the village going south on State Route 15A turn east onto Coykendall Road. In about 1 mile turn north onto Canadice Hollow Road. The cemetery is in about a quarter mile. The cemetery is in good condition.

CEMETERY HEMLOCK HARDER
The Harder Cemetery is located just off of Federal Road in Livonia NY. From the intersection of State Route 20A and Federal Road in Livonia Center go south on Federal Road to Harder Road. Turn east onto Harder Road and find the cemetery within 100 yards.

CEMETERY HEMLOCK SHORT
The Short Cemetery is located about a half mile south of Hemlock village and is behind the Sportsman's Club. The cemetery is somewhat overgrown with trees and brush.

CEMETERY HEMLOCK VILLAGE
The Hemlock Cemetery is located on Clay Street in Hemlock village. The cemetery is about a quarter mile east on Clay Street. The cemetery is not visible from the street. The cemetery is in good condition.

CEMETERY SPRINGWATER ASHLEY
The Ashley Cemetery is located just off State Route 15A approximately half way between Springwater and Wayland NY. At the intersection of State Route 15A and Walker Road turn east onto Walker Road. In about half mile turn south onto Ashley Road.

CEMETERY SPRINGWATER CHRISTIAN FORD
The Christian - Ford cemetery is located on Canadice Lake Road just south of the intersection with Wheaton Hill Road in Springwater NY. The cemetery is in good condition.

CEMETERY SPRINGWATER EAST AVENUE
The East Avenue cemetery is located on East Avenue in Springwater NY. From the four corners in Springwater where State Routes 15 and 15A intersect, turn east onto East Avenue. The cemetery is found within a quarter mile and sits on the left (north) side of the road. It has some wooden headstones and is the oldest cemetery in Springwater.

CEMETERY SPRINGWATER EVERGREEN
The Evergreen Cemetery is located on Canadice Lake road just south of the intersection with Reynolds Gull road in Springwater NY.

CEMETERY SPRINGWATER GREEN GULL
The Green Gull Cemetery is located on Canadice Road in Springwater NY. From the four corners in Springwater travel about 1 mile east on East Avenue to Canadice Road. Turn south onto Canadice Road and travel less than 1 mile to intersection with Marvin Hill Road. Continue south past the intersection at Marvin Hill Road about 1 mile.

CEMETERY SPRINGWATER MT VERNON
The Mt. Vernon Evergreen Cemetery is located on Kellogg road south of State Route 15 in Springwater NY.

CEMETERY WEBSTERS CROSSING ERWIN
The Erwin Cemetery is located just off of State Route 15 about one half mile south of the village of Websters Crossing. At the intersection of State Route 15 and Carney Hollow Road (County Road 60) bear south onto Carney Hollow Road. The cemetery is about one half mile south on Carney Hollow Road.

CHURCH CANADICE CORNERS
The Canadice Corners Methodist church is located in Canadice NY at the intersection of County Road 37 and Canadice Hill Road.

CHURCH CONESUS ST MICHAELS MISSION
St. Michael's Mission is located on the west slope of Hemlock Lake on Mission road in the town of Conesus.

CHURCH CONESUS UNITED
The Conesus United Church is located in the center of the village of Conesus NY on State Route 15.

CHURCH HEMLOCK BAPTIST
The First Baptist Church of Hemlock NY was dedicated in August of 1844 and had cost $1500 to construct. From facts furnished by Burnell Briggs it is learned that in 1834 Caleb Briggs of the Baptist faith came from Richmond and Canadice and held meetings with a small group of people in the home of Elias Archer, near the foot of Hemlock Lake.

The Hemlock Methodist Church is located on North Main St. in the village of Hemlock NY on State Route 15A.

CHURCH SPRINGWATER ADVENT
The Advent Church was located on Mill street just west of the four corners in the village of Springwater NY.

CHURCH SPRINGWATER CHRISTIAN
The Christian Church of Springwater NY was located at the north east corner of Canadice Lake road and Wheaton Hill road. The church became closed in 1913 because of lack of participation and maintainence.

CHURCH SPRINGWATER METHODIST
The Springwater Methodist Church is located on South Main St. (State Route 15) in the village of Springwater NY.

CHURCH SPRINGWATER PRESBYTERIAN
The Springwater Presbyterian Church was located on Main street in the village of Springwater NY. The church was torn down in 1933 and has been used as a town barn since then.

CHURCH SPRINGWATER WRIGHTS
The Wright's Church is located at the intersection of Wright's and Carney Hollow roads just west of the village of Springwater NY.

COMMUNITY DIXON HOLLOW HISTORY
Dixon Hollow NY was a small milling community located along the Canadice Outlet between Hemlock and Canadice Lakes prior to 1920. The Dixon Hollow Road passed through Dixon Hollow and provided access to Canadice Road in the east and North Old Bald Hill in the west.

Hemlock Lake, considered one of the most attractive of all the beautiful lakes in western New York. History tells us that this particular region was the home of the Seneca Indians and in the Seneca tongues was known as Onehda Tecarneodi, which in English was taken to mean Hemlock Lake.

FAIR HEMLOCK FIDDLERS PICNIC NEWS ARTICLE 2014 A BRIEF HISTORY
Here is a brief history of Ye Olde Fiddlers Picnic. The picnic started simply as a collection of friends who gathered at Alva Reed's home to make music. The event grew to be very large and was held at the Hemlock Lake park for years.

Banjo player Alva Reed hosted the first annual gathering known as Ye Olde Fiddlers Picnic in 1933 at his Richmond Mills Road farm. Two hundred people reportedly attended. Starting in 1935, the growing event was relocated to Hemlock Lake Park and continued until 1967.

In 1905 Adam Kraner, a native of Germany, purchased a 100 acre farm on Springwater's east hill at the corner of Wheaton Hill road and Strutt Street. In 1944, Rudolf Kammerer and his wife Margarete Winhold Kammerer, purchased the farm from Adam Kraner who was Rudolf's uncle. The Kammerer Homestead was a working farm and was named Hill Top Farm and later Pine Top Farm.

LIBRARY HISTORY LAWRENCE WILLIAM 1937 SPRINGWATER BUFFALO ST SCHOOL
On Saturday, June 19, 1937, a reunion of the residents, former pupils and teachers was held in Buffalo Street District School No. 11, of Springwater and Wayland. William Lawrence had a copy of the first clerk's book, copied in 1838, from the two first years' records, and continued by him, Andrew Spaford, for many years. From this and other data Mr. Lawrence wrote a most interesting history, showing the early formation, set-backs, manner of payment of teacher's salary in lumber delivered at the mill, six months terms, size of school, number of families, etc.

This area is a part of the Hemlock-Canadice Lakes State Forest which is pristine and yet easily accessible from State route 15A. There are several trails that lead to views of the lake and its nature. Judy is one of the historians for Springwater NY and is very active at the Kern-Robinson post of the American Legion. Here are photos and information about the Hemlock School House #4 in Hemlock NY. Built in 1876 and known as the Old Block School. In 1911 it was joined with the Number 12 school into the Union school at the center of the village of Hemlock NY. It was sold in 1912 and was the office of Dr. Ray Mills for a time.

In a fast game of basket ball Springwater defeated Scottsburg Thursday at Springwater. At the end of the second half the score was tied at 19 all and the game was continued until Springwater finally scored a basket.

Hemlock-Canadice State Forest refers to the Phelps and Gorham Purchase in Townships 7, 8 and 9, Ranges 5 and 6, located in the Finger Lakes Region, approximately 30 miles south of the city of Rochester. The property includes two large undeveloped parcels surrounding Hemlock and Canadice Lakes, totaling 6,684 acres in the towns of Canadice, Conesus, Livonia, Richmond and Springwater in Ontario and Livingston counties, being the same lands as more particularly described in deeds conveying such lands to the People of the State of New York, on file in the Department of Environmental Conservation, Albany, NY, and duly recorded in the offices of the county clerks of Ontario and Livingston counties.
