The Obituary of Mary E. Backus 19 December 1849 - 13 January 1934 From the Livonia Gazette, 19 January 1934 Mary Emily Backus, who was born in Evansville, N.Y., Dec. 19, 1849, daughter of Riley M. and Caroline Parkhill Backus, died at the home of Mrs. Harvey Dunn, Saturday evening, Jan. 13, 1934. Miss Backus came to Hemlock with her parents when but a small infant and had passed her life here. For several years she had made her home with Mrs. Dunn and family, who gave her kindly care in her declining years. She liked to read and her life was spent in a quiet manner. Funeral services were held from the home of Mrs. Dunn Monday afternoon at 2:30 p.m., with the Rev. C. F. French, assisted by the Rev. Ernest Reimer, officiating. Burial was in the Hemlock cemetery in the family plot.
