A Brief History by Ruth Henry Gladding

From the 50th Reunion of the Hemlock NY High School class of 1938

After graduation from Hemlock I attended Canandaigua Academy for 1 year. Then I attended Canandaigua School of Business for 1 year. I then married a farmer from Bristol, Kenneth Gladding.

After having 5 children, I then went to work at Rochester Products, where I worked for 15 years. We have 3 daughters and 2 sons.

Jeanette, our oldest and her husband live in Bristol. The both work for Emerson Electric in Honeoye Falls. They have 3 children, Chris, the oldest and her husband live in Geneva. They have 1 boy, 2 1/2 years. Ed lives in Marion, Ohio where he is the manager of a new Central Tractor store. He will be married in September. Simon, the youngest is a student at Honeoye Central.

Ken Jr., our second one, is living in Connecticut. He graduated from Cornell University and got his Master’s at the University of Arizona. He taught Vocational Agriculture in Litchfield Conn. for 10 years and now he is farming and he also coaches basketball in Litchfield. He has 3 children. Kathy lives in Irondequiot and works at Kodak. She will be married in September. Jeff lives in Connecticut and Jim is in the Navy at Norfork, Va.

Barbara, our third, lives in Livonia where her husband is head of maintenance at Livonia Central. She works in Mount Morris for Social Services. They have 3 children. The oldest, Liz lives in Norfork, Va. where her husband is in the Navy. They have one boy, 1 1/2 years old.

Ann, our fourth, lives near Churchville. She works at Kodak. She has 2 boys; Dan is in Ohio working at the Central Tractor store and David will be in his 2nd year at Cofleskill.

Ed, our youngest, lives in Farmington. They both work at Bausch and Lomb.

I forgot to mention about Barb’s daughter Susan, who is attending college in Virginia to be a court stenographer. Bill is attending RIT.

Hemlock - Ruth J. Gladding (Henry) passed away peacefully on Jan. 13, 2018, at age 95. She was predeceased by her husband, Kenneth Gladding; grandson, David Nichols; brother, Theodore Henry Jr.; and sisters, Marion Murray and Laura North. She is survived by children, Jeanette (John) Durkee, Kenneth Gladding Jr., Barbara (William) Muscato, Ann (William) Watt, and Edward Gladding; 13 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, 11 great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Ralph (Sue) Henry and many nieces, nephews and other loving family and friends.

Ruth was born on Dec. 3, 1922, in Richmond, N.Y., to parents Theodore Henry Sr. and Onnolee (Purcell) Henry. She married Kenneth E. Gladding on Nov. 10, 1940. She worked at General Motors - Rochester Products for many years and was the “Avon Lady” for the Livonia and Hemlock communities for over 30 years. Ruth was a member of the Hemlock Grange for 75 years, which she was very proud of. She was a dedicated and lifelong member of the Hemlock Baptist Church.

Ruth’s Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, April 21, 2018, 11 a.m., at the Hemlock Baptist Church, 4738 Main Street, Hemlock, NY 14466. Burial Evergreen Cemetery, Bristol, N.Y. Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the Hemlock Baptist Church at the address above.
